Government health chief: transit of Venus not safe to watch, "even on TV".

Chief Medical Officer Liam Donaldson has warned of the dangers of watching Tuesday's transit of Venus across the Sun and, in a statement issued from a lead-shielded room six storeys below Whitehall, added that, "it's probably best if you don't even watch it on TV or the internet but rely on a description handed down by an indirectly-related Great Uncle."

"The Sun's damaging rays are so powerful, they can travel via the medium of television - even when it's turned off", said Donaldson. "I'm recommending that every household fit a pair of mylar curtains to their sets in time for Tuesday and try not to go out ever again. It's a dangerous world out there, after all."

Watching the occasion on the internet is less hazardous, according to Health Chiefs, partly due to the amount of IP filtering and compression involved, but the Government still wants ISPs to fit extra curtains to their Black Boxes in time for the event.
